Fruitful Offerings

1Kings 3: 3-14

“Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statues of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places”. 1Kings 3:3

During the time of King Solomon and in Israel, there were no sacred places where the King offered his offerings unto the Lord. He and all the people went to high places to make sacrifices unto the Lord. God understood their situations and met with them there. They did not delay in bringing their sacrifices and offerings unto the Lord because there were no edifices or special temples where they could present them. Despite the peculiar challenge, they kept on serving God, giving their offerings and sacrifices. Interestingly, the Bible says that Solomon loved the Lord (beyond his position, his status, offerings, nor the splendour of being king, He loved the Lord. Can God say that about you?  With gratitude to God, Solomon brought a thousand bulls to the Lord to say thank.

1) Solomon thanked God on behalf of His father David (for the many mercies his father, received from God. How many of us can really thank God for our fathers (parents) like Solomon did and not fault their shortcomings towards us?

2) Solomon was thankful that God fulfilled His promise to David his father by giving him (David, a successor, (Solomon).

3) Solomon was thankful that God made him David’s successor (he wasn’t the first son of David yet God made him King). By every standard, (strength, hierarchy in the family etc. he wasn’t qualified to be a King yet God made him become king and for this, he was grateful.

Most times we do not appreciate God for the seemingly simple things of life (sleeping and waking, being in the faith, being in the position where we are) yet these are blessings we should be thankful for. If we think deeply, we will thank God. We may not be where we desire to be but God’s Word says that there is still hope for a tree even if it is cut down, as long as the root is in the tree, it will grow again. There is hope for tomorrow.

After Solomon brought his thanksgiving offering to the Lord, God told him to ask for just one thing and He asked for wisdom. God was so pleased with him for he did not ask for the lives of his enemies, for riches or for wealth, he asked for wisdom so he could rule justly. This showed the state of his heart at that time of his life.  God granted his request and added to him riches and honour such that there will be none like him ever. God also told him that if he served Him like his father David did, He would give him long life. Solomon asked for just one thing and God decided to handle the rest for him.

When we come before God in thanksgiving we should focus on blessing, worshipping and loving Him as we offer ourselves to Him. When we do this, He will do much more than we can ask of Him. May He say Amen to our prayers and requests and accept our thanksgiving in Jesus name, Amen.
