Building Christian Character

Titus 2:1-10

Beyond the name and the appellation of Christianity, Jesus is looking for a people whose character will be laundered after His own character; this is the whole essence of Christianity. God wants His character to be formed inside of you (Galatians 4:19).

While He was on earth Jesus did not need introduction. Everybody knew Jesus before He spoke. His actions, speeches, demeanour and everything about Him pointed to a clear fact that, that was a child of God. Many today who profess to be Christians are Christians by name but not in word and in deed.

The purpose of any teaching or instruction from the Bible is not just to provide us with the information but to seek and to build our character (1 Timothy 1:5). We need to begin to build our character from what we hear from the word of God.

Your character is never built in a classroom. Character is built in the circumstances of life. The classroom Bible study is simply the place to identify character and qualities and teach how character is developed. God uses the circumstances of life to develop our character. We are able to respond correctly when God places us in character building opportunities.

If your character does not reflect what you preach, you are a failure and a disgrace to the gospel. By their fruits, not gifts, you will know them (Matthew 7:15, 20). If we don’t cleanse ourselves as sons and daughters of God, then the God of the Acts of Apostles will begin to act as He did to those members of the church who claimed to be children of God and do all manner of evil (Acts 5:1-11). Why must we wait until God visits with punishment before we form Christian-like characters?

Your character will not be measured by what you do when you come to church. What is that aspect of your character that does not align with the character of Jesus? It is not sufficient for you to confess the Lordship of Jesus; it takes a lot more than that. Nobody is perfect but we should be working towards it.

Examine yourself to identify and deal with areas of weakness in your life with God’s help.
